Things Responsible Pet Owners Do

February 1 2021
It’s Responsible Pet Owners Month! Being a good pet owner means more than just providing your pet with food, water, and shelter. It actually entails monitoring all aspects of your furry friend’s life! Here, an Oshawa, ON veterinarian lists some things great pet owners do.

Offer Good Food

Proper nutrition is a crucial part of any pet care regimen. Give your animal companion the best food you can afford. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard. Far too many of our patients are overweight! Chubby pets may be cute, but they can face some pretty serious health issues.

Keep Up With Veterinary Care

Being a good pet owner means taking your pet to the vet regularly. We also recommend spaying or neutering dogs, cats, and rabbits. Microchipping is also a must for larger pets.

Watch For Signs Of Illness

Animals can’t tell us if something is hurting them, so it’s important to be able to spot red flags that could indicate a medical problem. The more time you spend with your pet, the easier it will be to tell when something just seems off.

Provide Comfortable Environments

Our animal companions all differ on what they need to be comfortable and happy in their environments. With smaller pets and exotics, this entails doing some research. A bird wouldn’t be happy in a bunny cage, while a snake wouldn’t do well in a hamster cage. Also, remember to offer your pet small luxuries like toys, treats, and comfy beds.

Groom Regularly

Don’t forget your pet’s beauty care needs! Good grooming will help keep your buddy looking and feeling great.

Safety First

Keeping pets safe entails a wide variety of things, such as petproofing and training. For instance, if you have a dog and a yard, you’ll need to make sure your fencing is secure. If you have a cat, we’d recommend keeping Fluffy inside. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Spend Time With Their Pets

You don’t necessarily have to center your life around your animal companion, though it’s safe to say that they would be delighted if you did. However, it is important to pay attention to them daily. This shouldn’t be a chore, but something you look forward to. Time with pets is never wasted! Please reach out if ever we can be of assistance. As your Oshawa, ON veterinary clinic, we’re here to help!
