Leaving Fido Home Alone

July 1 2019
Does your canine buddy stay home alone while you go to work? While your pet would no doubt love to hang out with you all day, every day, unfortunately that just isn’t realistic in most cases. Fido can do just fine by himself for short periods, but you’ll need to take steps to keep him happy, healthy, and comfortable. Here, an Oshawa, ON vet discusses leaving your dog home alone.

Walk

Before you leave for the day, take your dog for a long walk. Then, if possible, tire him out with a fun play session. Fido may spend a chunk of the day just resting and relaxing after his morning workout!

Doggyproofing

Dogs often turn to mischief when they are bored, lonely, or anxious. Make sure your home is safe for Fido by removing or securing potential hazards. This includes things like toxic plants, wires and cords, chemicals, medications, plastic bags and ties, and anything small or sharp.

Toys

Making sure Fido has plenty of toys is very important. Puzzle toys are great here, as they can keep dogs occupied for hours. Rotate your canine friend’s toys out regularly to keep things fun and fresh for him.

Keep Calm

We know, it’s hard to leave that furry face behind. It’s also always great to come home to a happy pup. However, avoid drawn-out greetings and farewells. You could inadvertently be rewarding bad doggy behavior!

Keep A Routine

Dogs really thrive when they are kept on a steady routine. Of course, it may not be possible to stick to the same exact schedule every day. Just be as consistent as you can.

Comforts

Small touches can help keep your furry pal happy and comfortable. Leave your climate control on for Fido. Also, keep a light on if you’ll be out after dark. You may also want to turn a TV or radio on for your pet. The sounds of music and voices will soothe him, and keep him from feeling lonely. Also, make sure your four-legged friend always has plenty of water.

Enlist Help

Fido shouldn’t be left alone for extended periods of time. If you’re often gone more than 8 hours at a time, hire a dog walker or enroll your canine companions in doggy day care. Please contact us, your Oshawa, ON vet clinic, for all your pup’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
